Why everything is awesome for "The Lego Batman Movie"

Writer: Casey Chong

It's good to be... Batman!

Three years after "The Lego Movie" struck golden bricks at the box office and made "Everything Is Awesome" such a catchy Oscar-nominated theme song, the beloved blocky characters are back on the big screen!

Only this time, the attention is now turned to Batman (voiced by Will Arnett), who gets his own spin-off via "The Lego Batman Movie". If you have caught up on all the trailers released so far, you know that "The Lego Batman Movie" is set to be a colourful blast of fun.

Now, with the highly-anticipated animated feature arriving this week, here are the 5 reasons why we think everything in "The Lego Batman Movie" would be awesome!

1. Will Arnett is back as Batman

Yes, I'm back as Batman.

One of the best things about "The Lego Movie" three years ago was a scene-stealing voice performance from Will Arnett as Batman. The Canadian comedian really nailed his gravel-voiced Batman role and it's definitely nice to have him back to take centre stage in "The Lego Batman Movie". Why? Because he's Batman!

2. Expect a large gallery of heroes and villains from the Batman universe

If you are a die-hard movie fan, you should probably know that "too many characters" in one superhero movie can jeopardise the whole quality. Remember how Joel Schumacher ruined things big time in "Batman & Robin"? But in the case of "The Lego Batman Movie", the more the merrier. Besides Batman and Robin, you get to see other familiar DC comic characters such as Batgirl, Harley Quinn, Two-Face, Joker, The Riddler, Catwoman, Wonder Woman, Superman, Green Lantern and The Flash. Since "The Lego Movie" can handle multiple characters well, we don't see why this spin-off can't repeat the same feat.

3. This Batman is a fun character everyone can root for

Batman thinks it ain't easy to be around Robin.

In recent years, the live-action portrayal of Batman played by Christian Bale and Ben Affleck respectively are all cut from the same cloth: they are both dark, grim and brooding characters. Sure, this is how Batman should be in the modern era. But at the same time, is it necessary that every superhero has to be dark and dead serious? Thankfully, it's a refreshing change of pace to see Will Arnett's Batman in "The Lego Batman Movie" which brings back the fun that has been missing since... the Silver Age and of course, the Adam West era of the 1960s "Batman" television series.

4. Get ready for lots of pop-culture references

Now, let's see how many pop-culture references you can find in my movie...

While general audiences can enjoy and laugh at all the zany fun featured in "The Lego Batman Movie", Batman fans and movie enthusiasts will have a field day detecting a barrage of pop-culture references here.

5. Reviews so far are... phenomenal

Thank you! Thank you all for the kind reviews about my movie.

Just like the well-received "Lego Movie", "The Lego Batman Movie" has so far received a near-universal response among many critics from the US. The movie has been hailed from "the best Batman movie since 'The Dark Knight" to yes, "everything is awesome". In fact, "The Lego Batman Movie" is set to do big business at the worldwide box office. Since most people are talking about "The Lego Batman Movie" this month, it's difficult to ignore this altogether.

"The Lego Batman Movie" opens in cinemas nationwide on 9 February 2017.
