Movies Not to Miss: May 2019

Writer: Casey Lee

Which of these are you going to watch?

May is the month for sweethearts and the diehards. With sappy (or hilarious) romances and some nail-biting action, and also some blockbusters in between, May is helping us to warm our seats before the biggest releases of the year are here.

So here are our picks on what's not to miss this May!

Long Shot

The first romantic movie we have says it all in the title. Premiered at South by Southwest, director Jonathan Levine is back with another comedy outing, this time with Seth Rogen as a out-of-luck journalist trying to woo Charlize Theron, a presidential candidate and former babysitter of Rogen's character. Between trying to prove that status and power can't get in the way of love, we are more eager to see how Rogen and Theron would spice it up with their comedic chemistry, alongside Andy Serkis, Alexander Skarsgård, Lisa Kudrow, and even Boyz II Men.

Brightburn

DC and Marvel may be done with their knockout punches this year, but the superhero genre is not yet over with a little title that could be one of the best superhero movies to come out this year. Written by James Gunn's cousin and brother as a subversion of Superman's origin story, the prospect of a child Superman who uses his powers for evil puts an interesting horror twist that we didn't expect. Directed by David Yarovesky, Elizabeth Banks and David Denman will be the unfortunate parents who will have to take care of their superpowered alien son, and we are already hoping that more original superhero movies would come out of this.

Pokemon: Detective Pikachu

Based on the Nintendo 3DS video game out of the Pokemon universe, Warner Bros. is trying everything to make this concept work even if it sounds like it doesn't, and we think it is already working. We may not be getting Ryan Reynolds in a new Deadpool movie this year, but we will do with him voicing a cute adorable talking Pikachu (with maybe a few inappropriate lines or two). While the story is set up to be a mystery with a case to solve (and fighting other Pokemons), we think we are going to enjoy the bond between Pikachu and Justice Smith as a friend who is searching for his missing father.

The Hustle

While we don't know when we will get a sequel for "Ocean's Eight", we are definitely up for seeing more female-centered heist movies. Being targeted and then outsmarting "Ocean's Eight", Anne Hathaway is leading her own heist in this remake of 1988's "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels", together with the always affable Rebel Wilson, as two lady con artists trying to take revenge on the men who had wronged them.

John Wick Chapter 3: Parabellum

Just months after its first sequel, this action franchise announced that it was expanding into a trilogy, and now we are here with guns loaded (and horses bridled). After being breaking the one rule in the Continental, John Wick is now excommunicated with every assassin around the world on his heel to collect the bounty on his head. To fight his way out of the city, Wick calls on one favor from an old friend. We can't wait to see what director Chad Stahelski will put Keanue Reeves through for the third time, this time with Halle Berry, as Wick goes toe to toe with some of the most fearsome stunt actors like Hiroyuki Sanada and Tiger Chen.

The Sun is Also a Star

Director Ry Russo-Young is back with a new adaptation of a young adult novel. Based on the Nicola Yoon novel about a quantum physics student and an exchange student who form a quick romantic relationship, only to find out that one of them would be deported soon. This is one for those who love their short but intense romances, and this one comes with a little commentary on the climate against immigrants in the United States that makes this romance all the more tougher to be together.

Aladdin

The march of the Disney live action adaptation continues. After "Dumbo", the next title to get its live-action adaptation is one of the classics from the Renaissance era. Marred by the controversy of the casting of Genie than it is non-white cast, we are still trusting that that this would be an "Aladdin" to be proud of. Directed by Guy Ritchie, with Mena Massoud as Aladdin, Naomi Scott as Princess Jasmine, Marwan Kenzari as Jafar and Will Smith as Genie himself, we hope that the music of Alan Menken would bring back the good memories of being shown a whole new world.

General Release Date: 23 May

Godzilla: King of the Monsters

Godzilla returns to Hollywood in this second fully American produced Godzilla movie, but is the third entry in Legendary's MonsterVerse, following "Kong". With the return of Godzilla, it also awakens several other monsters back to the world including the three-headed King Ghidorah, Mothra and Rodan, as humanity decides which side they should take in the war of monsters. Taking over directing duties from Garenth Edwards is Michael Dougherty who also co-wrote the script, and we are also getting a new cast led by Kyle Chandler and Vera Farmiga. Ken Watanabe, Sally Hawkins make their return as Monarch scientists, with Zhang Ziyi joining the group.

The Secret Life of Pets 2

Illumination Entertainment is back with their latest animation of adorable creatures. Set after some life-changing events since 2016's "The Secret of Pets", Max's owner has few new additions to the family, while Snowball is on a mission to save more oppressed animals. The familiar voices of Eric Stonestreet, Jenny Slate, Lake Bell, and Kevin Hart are back as their characters, except for C.K. Louis who has been replaced by Patton Oswalt as Max. Joining the pets are Tiffany Haddish as a shih tzu and Harrison Ford in his debuting animation role as a no nonsense sheepdog.
