Deathstroke to get solo movie from "The Raid" director

Writer: Farah Hanis

Glad to see that the studio has not given up on Deathstroke.

26 Oct – Following the success of DC Comics anti-hero team "Suicide Squad", it seems that Warner Bros. is looking to continue the trend by giving the comic's greatest assassin, Deathstroke, his own solo movie.

"Magic Mike's" Joe Manganiello is said to star as the mercenary with "The Raid" director Gareth Evans in early talks to write and direct the standalone film, as reported by The Wrap.

While no deals have been completed for both Manganiello and Evans, the project is reported to be a starring vehicle for the actor who has yet to land a leading role in any blockbuster film.

Previously set to make his cinematic debut in the Dark Knight solo movie, "The Batman", the future for Manganiello's Deathstroke is left uncertain after Matt Reeves stepped up to replace Ben Affleck as helmer and reportedly ditched Affleck's script.

Deathstroke was first introduced in "New Teen Titans No. 2" comics in 1980 with the intention of making him a one-off villain for the Teen Titans. As he slowly garnered fan base, DC then gave him his own series "Deathstroke the Terminator" in which he faced off with Batman for the first time. As for Evans, famous for directing the 2011 Indonesian martial arts film "The Raid" and its sequel, the director lands a gold mine after impressing DC executives with his Deathstroke pitch despite passing on helming "Justice League Dark".

Evans' upcoming work is the period thriller "Apostle" starring Dan Stevens that is set to debut next year through Netflix, while Manganiello will have Dwayne Johnson's video game to big screen adaptation, "Rampage", due out in North America April 2018.

Upcoming DC film "Justice League" will open this 16 November in Malaysia and Singapore, and on 17 November in Cambodia.
