25 Jul – Academy Award-winning actress Anne Hathaway is currently in talks to star in the titular role of Sony Pictures' upcoming "Barbie".

The big screen adaptation of Mattel's iconic toy line initially cast Amy Schumer as the lead role, but the actress dropped out in March due to scheduling conflicts.

At the same time, Australian director Alethea Jones, of "Fun Mom Dinner" fame, is also in talks to helm the film after getting nods from Hathaway.

However, studio reps have stressed that the casting is premature and no deal has been confirmed yet, Variety reports.

With Hathaway replacing Schumer, it is not clear if the "Barbie" plot will remain the same, but the original story followed Barbie, a woman who realises that she no longer fits in Barbieland and journeys to the real world, where she discovers that being unique is an asset.

The movie, which is said to be in the vein of "Enchanted", has been described as being a contemporary spin on the iconic doll with an emphasis on feminism and identity.

The movie is scheduled to be released in the U.S. on 29 June 2018.
