Original team reuniting for "Lethal Weapon 5"?

Writer: Farah Hanis

There might just be hope for another instalment in the "Lethal Weapon" franchise.

30 Oct – Hollywood is giving more and more classic movies their deserving sequel or reboot treatments, and now words are spreading of a legendary movie – which made a name in the buddy cop genre – jumping on the bandwagon.

Deadline brought words that the hit "Lethal Weapon" franchise is currently looking at a very possible fifth instalment with its original team.

Leading stars Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, as well as director Richard Donner, are in talks with Warner Bros. for the long-awaited "Lethal Weapon 5". Screenwriter Channing Gibson ("Lethal Weapon 4") is also rumoured to join in on the reunion party.

A new chapter in the long-established franchise is no new news with Donner and Channing Gibson planning for it back in 2007 until Warner Bros., the studio in charge with all the previous instalments, yielded control to the series to producer Joel Silver.

Silver then brought on board writer and series creator Shane Black to pen the script but that project was later abandoned as actor Gibson refused to shoot a "Lethal Weapon" movie without Donner.

At some point, the studio had also try to reboot the franchise, even courting Chris Hemsworth for Gibson's role and having Justin Lin to helm a script by Will Beall, but nothing actually materialised from the news.

1998's "Lethal Weapon 4" was Jet Li's debut in the American movie industry.

The "Lethal Weapon" franchise proved to be a success following its launch in 1987, having collected over USD955 million worldwide.

The original film written by Black followed LAPD homicide cop Roger Murtaugh (played by Glover), who has been unwillingly partnered with the daring and young Martin Riggs (played by Gibson). Together, they must put aside their differences to stop a drug smuggling gang.

A small screen debut has also been made in 2016, with the series now in its second season on FOX starring Damon Wayans as Murtaugh and Clayne Crawford as Riggs.

While we wait for more update on this exciting project, look forward to seeing Gibson's upcoming comedy movie "Daddy's Home 2" when it opens this 30 November in Malaysia and Singapore.
