Robert Downey Jr. is thinking it's time to retire his Iron Man role.

4 Jul – You may have heard that Robert Downey Jr. is thinking of hanging up his Iron Man suit for good, now the actor has supplied curious fans of the reason why he's thinking of doing it and how much longer he may be playing the superhero character.

"I just want to hang up my jersey before it's embarrassing," said the 52-year-old Oscar nominee, who has portrayed Iron Man in Marvel movies since 2008, to Australia's News.com.

The actor stated that while he has had a good run with the character, he doesn't want to "blow it for the last six or seven (MCU movies) I have done by dropping the ball because I decided to go do it one more time."

It's never a bad idea to quit while you're ahead, understandably fans and critics alike could see where the actor is going with this. His acting career already had a revival with this famous role, he might be pushing his luck with it if he doesn't know when to stop.

He first played Tony Stark a.k.a. Iron Man in the 2008 movie named after the superhero. The success of the movie was what essentially kickstarted the whole Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) we see today. The movie received two sequels, "Iron Man 2" (2010) and "Iron Man 3" (2013).

Downey Jr.'s Iron Man has also appeared in "The Incredible Hulk" (2008), "The Avengers" (2012), "Avengers: Age of Ultron" (2015), and "Captain America: Civil War" (2016).

As for the when, his last onscreen appearance as the superhero might really be in 2019, when the currently untitled "Avengers" movie, which will mark his tenth time reprising the role, gets released in cinemas.

So fans, that's only three more times you'll get to see Downey Jr. as Iron Man. Apart from the 2019 movie, there is also next year's "Avengers: Infinity War" and of course, the latest to hit the cinemas, "Spider-Man: Homecoming", opening in cinemas this week.
