13 Jul – The Scarlett Johansson-starring "Black Widow" will give fans a look into the Russian spy-turned-superhero's life before whatever events that took place in "Marvel's The Avengers".

That's because the standalone Black Widow movie is reportedly going to be a prequel, set before the 2012 Avengers movie, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This means it's going to be in the same vein as Brie Larson-starrer "Captain Marvel", MCU's first female-led comic book movie, which will also be a prequel, set in the '90s.

Not much is known yet about the plot for "Black Widow". The most recent draft is penned by Jac Schaeffer, who was tapped to write the script back in January.

The director for the female superhero's solo vehicle has also been confirmed, with Australian filmmaker Cate Shortland finally chosen as the helmer.

Shortland's name was among the shortlisted female filmmakers that were revealed last month. She is most known for directing Nazi drama "Lore" and last year's "Berlin Syndrome". While she doesn't have an agency representation, it was said that Johansson pushed for her to be picked.

Marvel Studios met with over 70 directors for over half a year to look for the perfect helmer, prioritising female filmmakers, though at one point the search turned to male directors when there was a moment of lull.

Before starring in her standalone movie, Black Widow will be seen first in the yet-to-be-titled 2019 "Avengers 4" movie.
