"Spider-Man: Homecoming" sequel welcomes Jake Gyllenhaal

Writer: Florey DM

Jake Gyllenhaal will be playing the supervillain, Mysterio.

22 May – Is the Sinister Six going to be featured in the follow-up to "Spider-Man: Homecoming"? Things seem to be heading that way with two of the supervillain team members now joining the upcoming sequel.

The new addition to the movie will be Mysterio, whom Jake Gyllenhaal is currently in talks to play, Variety reports.

If Gyllenhaal accepts, this will be the first comic book movie role for the actor.

The character he will be playing is, as mentioned, one of the Sinister Six supervillains. It is an identity assumed by several characters in the comics, starting with stuntman and special effects wizard Quentin Beck, who works for a major Hollywood studio.

It hasn't been revealed which of the Mysterio incarnation Gyllenhaal will be playing but it could be assumed that it would be Beck, since he is the most high-profile and is created by Stan Lee alongside Steve Ditko.

This isn't Gyllenhaal's first brush with the "Spider-Man" movie universe. He had previously been considered to replace Tobey Maguire after the latter hurt his back and was feared not able to heal in time to play the webcrawler. Well, we know how that went.

Michael Keaton, who debuted as Vulture in 2017's "Spider-Man: Homecoming", is back to play the supervillain.

In the upcoming sequel, Mysterio will be joining fellow Sinister Six supervillain, Vulture, who was first introduced in the MCU in last year's "Spider-Man: Homecoming".

Michael Keaton will be back to reprise his role as Vulture.

Most of the "Spider-Man: Homecoming" team will be returning as Jon Watts will once again direct from a script by Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers, while the returning cast includes Tom Holland as the titular teenage superhero, Zendaya as MJ and Marisa Tomei as Aunt May.

There is still no confirmed title for the sequel, Kevin Feige had said it will not simply be called "Spider-Man: Homecoming 2".

The producer did confirm though that the next movie will be set in London following the global aftermath of "Avengers: Infinity War" and "Avengers 4".
