Kristen Stewart (L) will be starring as Princess Diana in "Spencer".
18 Jun – Kristen Stewart sure has come a long way since her "Twilight" days. Her upcoming role will be her portraying a strong woman instead, a princess who remained loved throughout the world even after her demise.
Deadline reported that Stewart has been cast to star as Princess Diana in the Pablo Larraín-directed drama, "Spencer".
The movie, scripted by Steven Knight, will follow a pivotal weekend in the late princess' life, when she finally decided her marriage with Prince Charles was not working. It takes place over three days, set in the House of Windsor in their Sandringham estate in Norfolk, England, during one of her final Christmas holidays there.
Larraín said regarding the movie, "We all grew up, at least I did in my generation, reading and understanding what a fairy tale is. Usually, the prince comes and finds the princess, invites her to become his wife and eventually she becomes queen. That is the fairy tale.
"When someone decides not to be the queen, and says, I'd rather go and be myself, it's a big big decision, a fairy tale upside down. I've always been very surprised by that and thought it must have been very hard to do. That is the heart of the movie."
As for the movie's 30-year-old star, the director called her an "intriguing choice", adding that "To do this well, you need something very important in film, which is mystery. Kristen can be many things, and she can be very mysterious and very fragile an ultimately very strong as well, which is what we need.
"The combination of those elements made me think of her. The way she responded to the script and how she is approaching the character, it's very beautiful to see. I think she's going to do something stunning and intriguing at the same time. She is this force of nature."
Production on "Spencer" is expected to begin in 2021.
As for Stewart, she recently made her return to blockbuster films with 2019 action comedy "Charlie's Angels" and this year's sci-fi horror "Underwater". She will be seen starring next in "Happiest Season" and will also be releasing her fourth directorial effort, "The Chronology of Water", though it remains undated at the moment.
