25 Jun – Seeing that it was the second highest-grossing movie of 1996, there's no surprise that Universal Pictures is planning to make a reboot of "Twister".

The studio is in talks with "Top Gun: Maverick" director Joseph Kosinski to helm the new movie, according to Variety.

If Kosinski seals the deal, this marks his second movie with Universal, who distributed his 2013 Tom Cruise-starring "Oblivion". Since he's also reteamed with Cruise for the "Top Gun" sequel, fans can hope that he might cast the actor to star in his version of "Twister".

The original "Twister" was helmed by Dutch director Jan de Bont and executive produced by Steven Spielberg. It starred Helen Hunt as metrologist Dr. Joanne "Jo" Harding and Bill Paxton as storm chaser Bill "The Extreme" Harding.

The movie received mixed reviews but still did well at the box office, impressing audiences and critics with its visual effects despite the poor plot. It also earned two Oscar nominations, in the Best Visual Effects and Best Sound categories.

There are no further details on the reboot, as it is still looking for scriptwriters.

As for Kosinski, "Twister" will mark his fifth big screen work. He made his directorial debut with "Tron" Legacy" 10 years ago and has followed that up with the abovementioned "Oblivion" and 2017's "Only the Brave".

His upcoming "Top Gun: Maverick", now in post-production, was originally scheduled as a summer 2020 blockbuster release but has now been pushed to December 2020.
