“Duhai Si Pari-Pari”
Nabil Raja Lawak's life has its dull moments... and sadly, they are portrayed in Aminah Rhapor's directorial feature debut "Lu Pikirlah Sendiri de Movie". Showing initial promise, considering Nabil's presence as a comedian, the film however was neither funny, charming, engaging and worth the watch. According to Rhapor, the film is 70% based on Nabil's life before winning the title as Raja Lawak in Season 2. Frankly, it was an unfortunate angle to focus on as it lacked plot consistency and purpose.
Chronicling Nabil's hardship life as he takes on odd jobs as a mail despatch fellow by day and char kuey teow seller by night, it's also showcases an odd love story between him and a spoiled rich girl, played by newcomer acress Puteri Sarah Liyana. Unfortunately, in real life, Nabil didn't quite get the girl as their differences were apparent. However, in this fairy tale story, the ending is sure to prove otherwise.
Following their journey, we see Malaysian band Meet Uncle Hussain strumming and singing their songs in numerous scenes alongside Nabil such as "Mula", "La La La Kerjalah" and "Lagu Untukmu". The songs were undoubtedly entertaining, yet their involvement as small-time characters were nonsensical as the film approached to an end. In a way, it feels like this movie was made to promote them as their music was terribly overplayed. Moreover, audiences will constantly be blinded by numerous GIVI branding where the actors had to wear GIVI caps, jackets and ride GIVI motorcycles. If you didn't know, it is a company that specialises in motorcycle accessories and it is the major sponsor for the making of this film.
Audiences must brace themselves for a whirlwind of confusion with the inconsistent and senseless flow of the story. The characters are as shallow as piss on concrete and their behaviours will in some way irk you. Take Sarah Liyana's character for example, she would drive over to wherever Nabil was just to either scold him, give him a piece of her mind, or to execute an evil plan on him. Bear in mind, her actions of hatred are based on Nabil's frank opinions of her as a spoiled kid who doesn't appreciate education. But then again, she ridiculously falls in love with the man for God knows what reasons.
Sarah Liyana, and Mila from Akademi Fantasia Season 5 lands their acting debut in film, where poor acting can be seen in Sarah Liyana as fails to exude an angry guise and constantly has a 'this-is-so-funny-but-I-can't-laugh' facial expression. She just couldn't deliver herself as an actress and as for the rest, there's much more room for improvement. Other well-known actors make their cameos here such as Hisham Ahmad Tajuddin, Zizan Raja Lawak, Vanida Imran, Faizal Tahir, Aziz M. Osman, Amy Search, and Harun Salim Bachik.
Overall, "Lu Pikirlah Sendiri de Movie" lacked the charm and humour to keep this film afloat in the face of a below than average storyline.Cinema Online, 05 February 2010
