Wes Craven's latest flick "My Soul To Take" is not one of his best but more likely his worst film ever. This is his first effort as both writer and director since 1994's underappreciated meta-horror experiment "A New Nightmare".

The story revolves around the lives of a group of teenagers in the picturesque Connecticut town of Riverton who were born prematurely on the same day 16 years ago when a serial killer known as the Riverton Ripper was supposedly killed in an ambulance crash after being captured by the police. According to local legend, the Ripper managed to parcel out his seven scattered personalities (or souls) into the bodies of seven newborns.

The youth of Riverton maintain a tradition called "Ripper Night", observing not only the Ripper's last-known victory, but also the eerily coincidental birthdays of the seven teens, all born prematurely the same hour the Ripper's spree ended. The "Riverton Seven" consists of naive Bug (Max Thieriot), his prankster best friend, Alex (John Magaro); cute girl Brittany (Paulina Olszynski); jock jerk Brandon (Nick Lashaway); religious Penelope (Zena Grey); blind Jerome (Denzel Whitaker); and Jay (Jeremy Chu), who doesn't survive long enough to demonstrate any notable characteristics.

The story goes on as to how the night after their annual ritual is broken up by the police, one of the Riverton Seven (Jeremy Chu) is brutally murdered, and the following day the rest start getting killed one by one. The movie takes you on a ridiculously long journey of assumptions. For example, if the Ripper never died or if it was one of the teens using the ripper's legacy as a cover for murder. Craven, who has delivered the low budget classic "Last House On The Left", has not been able to scare anyone for years and his latest flick "My Soul To Take" is no exception.

"My Soul To Take" is a disappointment in the way it drags out its narration to little effect. The dialogue is weak, awkward and expository. The whole "soul" characteristic of the film goes completely ignored until the very end when it becomes so long-winded and squeezed in that it no longer seems vital to the film at all. Throughout the movie it seemed like Craven was forgetting that he was making an R-rated slasher film, the plot of the movie was sloppy, dialogues from the Ripper is especially bad and Craven ruined the film by letting characters who should be silent talk nonsense.

The story's flaws are compounded by really poor editing and it is only reasonable to wonder if the legendary director might have lost his touch entirely.
