"Ramaiya Vastavaiya" is a Telugu word which translates to English as "Ramaiya, will you come?" The film has not one but many known facts. The film title is borrowed from the legendary Raj Kapoor's 1955 film "Shree 420" song, and it also happens to be the remake of choreographer-turned-director Prabhu Deva's 2005 Telugu film title "Nuvvostanante Nenoddantana". The film is loosely inspired by 1989 film "Maine Pyar Kiya" while the plot is loosely based on the 1998 film "Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya".
The film tells the story of Ram (Girish Kumar Taurani), a rich lad from Australia who, while attending a wedding in India, falls in love with Sona (Shruthi Hassan), a middle class Punjabi girl from Punjab. Their love blossoms very quickly but unfortunately Sona's over proctective brother Raghu (Sonu Sood) dislikes the rich and Ram's mother Ashvini (Poonam Dillion) dislikes the poor. Raghu and Ashvini try their best to create obstacles to separate Ram and Sona. Will they succeed? Watch the film to find out.
This film marks the Bollywood debut of Girish Kumar Taurani and for a newcomer; he does all right for an unrealistic character. He carries the film quite well but with more film offerings and perhaps a change of name, might just help him launch his career further. Shruthi Hassan (daughter of famous Tamil actor Kamal Hassan) looks very sweet and nice here. Supporting cast (Sonu Sood, Randhir Kapoor, Vinod Khanna and Poonam Dillion) do well too. Prabhu Deva and current Bollywood item girl Jacqueline Fernandez, makes a special appearance together in song as well.
As for the storyline, there is nothing new that one has never seen before. The first half moves well but the second half's slow pace might bore the audience a little. From the synopsis, audience can already anticipate a very predictable storyline. To be fair, Prabhu Deva does a fair job in executing a love story despite that it has been remade many times previously.
The music of the film is quite refreshing, cheerful and vibrant. It helps newcomer Girish Kumar showcase his romantic nature and dancing skills. Sachin-Jigar provides a good album for Bollywood listeners as the songs are funky, soulful and very Hindi-pop style. Cinematography-wise, the film uses a lot of bright colours which might be a little painful to the eyes but it is something different and fresh.
Overall, "Ramaiya Vastavaiya" is a simple, honest and lovable film for the family.Cinema Online, 23 July 2013
