The Good, the Bad and the Tulip Mania:

• "Tulip Fever" is surprising entry that works as history, drama, romance and mystery, with plenty of twists and turns.

• The movie also has some subtle but enjoyable comic relief from a couple of minor characters.

• But the film can be quite confusing initially as the focus character is unclear.

• The film would have worked better as a TV miniseries so then all the plot lines could be developed properly and characters given better to work with.

• Overall, it's enjoyable but just feels like better writing would make the film really stand out as the period piece it should be.

Trivia:

• The film cast includes three Oscar winners: Judi Dench, Alicia Vikander and Christoph Waltz.
