A village high in the mountains has a boatman, Toichi, who ferries the villagers to a nearby town on the other side of the river. But a bridge is being built and soon the lonely boatman will lose his job, as well as the only semblance of human connection that he has. His life changes when one day, he rescues a mysterious young girl and lets her stay with him, as she has no family and nowhere else to go.
