During World War II, 9-year-old Dovidl Rapaport, a highly gifted violin prodigy, is among the Polish-Jewish refugee to London. He gets placed in the Simmonds family, where Martin, a boy of the same age, soon grows to love him as a brother. Dovidl continues honing his violin skills over the years but on the eve of his solo concert at age 21, he mysteriously disappears. 35 years later, Martin learns that he might still be alive and embarks on an obsessive intercontinental search to find him.
