The 5 most exciting sequels coming out in 2022

Writer: Nisa Irina

Whenever a movie becomes a hit, we already know a sequel is on its way. Now that cinemas are reopening and movie studios can run again, we'll be seeing a ton of exciting sequels from the movies we loved before the lockdowns. Let's check out a few of them and what we can look forward to watching soon!

"Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness"

As "Spider-Man: No Way Home" premiers on the silver screen, MCU fans are beginning to get more hyped about what new movies they might get next from the beloved franchise. More and more rumours are flying about the X-men and the Avengers possibly getting cameos in the film. The film has been dubbed the scariest Marvel film ever made, which is quite a different direction that the first film took. The film will be directed by Sam Raimi, who also directed "The Evil Dead" horror series.

While most parts of this important Phase 4 film will feature the return of Benedict Cumberbatch's Doctor Strange and exploring the multiverse, it will also continue Wanda Maximoff a.k.a. Scarlet Witch's story after "WandaVision". There's no denying that there are a number of theories circulating the Internet about what the sequel will contain, but fans will just have to patiently wait until the movie comes out to see what will actually happen.

"Thor: Love and Thunder"

"Thor: Ragnarok" was action-packed, hilarious, and kept us on the edge of our seats the entire time. Its upcoming sequel, "Thor: Love and Thunder", which will also be directed by "Ragnarok" director Taika Waititi is undoubtably one of the most highly-anticipated MCU Phase 4 films. The film will features the return of Chris Hemsworth as the fearsome Thor, Tessa Thompson's Valkyrie, Christian Bale's Gorr the God Butcher, Waititi's Korg, as well as Natalie Portman's Jane Foster.

As far as we know, the fourth instalment will pick up after the events of "Avengers: Endgame" - minus the fat Thor, of course, with Jane Foster surfacing as Mighty Thor after Thor loses his ability to lift Mjolnir, his great hammer, signalling his unworthiness. At the same time, Valkyrie, the new leader of the Asgardians, searches for her lover.

Waititi has also confirmed that fans will get a glimpse of the ruthless Starsharks from the comics in action on-screen!

"Black Panther: Wakanda Forever"

Despite the tragic passing of Chadwick Boseman, "Black Panther 2" will still be making its way to the silver screen with the final title, "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever". To honour the late actor's legacy, writer-director Ryan Coogler has stated that he has no intention of recasting a new actor to play the lead role King T'Challa a.k.a. Black Panther.

Instead, Marvel Studios has confirmed that the sequel will explore the world of Wakanda and the fascinating characters we were introduced to in the first film. There were just too many people to explore the full personalities and stories of in the original movie, so it's great that we're getting the chance to now! The film will take a bit longer to hit cinemas, however, as reworks for the movie following Boseman's death have pushed back the release date from May to July 2022.

"Avatar 2"

Unless more delays hit the team, we'll be getting the second instalment of epic science fiction film "Avatar" on December 2022, with James Cameron returning as director. The 2009 film broke several box-office records, making it the highest-grossing film of all time until it was overtaken by Marvel's "Avengers: Endgame" in 2019. The sequel has excitingly snatched the crown back from Marvel, surpassing USD 2.8 billion in box office sales. With "Endgame" clocking in at USD 2.797 billion, it was a very close call. Either way, "Avatar" fans rejoice! Not only we'll be getting one, but four sequels spanning from 2022 until 2025. According to rumours, the film will take place 12 years after the events of the first film, following Jake Sully as he and Neytiri roam the planet of Pandora. Nothing about the storyline is confirmed, yet as the director refuses to divulge any other juicy details about the sequels.

"Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse 2"

"Spider-Man" fans have been well-fed with the variety of reboots coming out over the past couple of decades, especially with the animated "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse", which was a unique spin on the usual Spider-Man story. The story and visuals were so breathtaking that we just couldn't tear our eyes away from the screen. Other than winning Best Animated Feature at the 91st Academy Awards, the critically-acclaimed film was similarly successful at the 46th Annie Awards and the 76th Golden Globe Awards.

Since the day it was revealed, the sequel quickly became the most anticipated animated comic book film. Sadly, fans have to wait another year before they can watch it on the big screen. Although those at the helm of the film remain silent about the plot, we can expect to see more of Oscar Isaac's Miguel O'Hara a.k.a. Spider-Man 2099, which was introduced in the post-credits scene of the first film.
