A detective thriller with a supernatural twist: Inside "Vikkatakavi" on ZEE5 Global
Writer:

"Vikkatakavi" brings supernatural detective drama to global audiences on ZEE5 Global
6 Dec
- "Vikkatakavi: The Chronicles of Amaragiri" is an enthralling detective thriller set in the 1970s that takes viewers on a journey through Amaragiri, a fictional town grappling with mysterious occurrences.
With its captivating narrative and stellar performances, "Vikkatakavi" promises to be a visual treat for fans of suspense and drama. The show is exclusively streaming on ZEE5 Global - the world's largest streaming platform for South Asian content.
"Vikkatakavi" follows Detective Ramakrishna (played by Naresh Agastya), whose investigation into strange events is further complicated by Amaragiri's impending submergence underwater. Adding a layer of royal legacy and drama is Princess Lakshmi (played by Megha Akash), a character steeped in tradition yet modern in her perspective.
In an exclusive interview with Cinema Online, the lead duo Naresh Agastya and Megha Akash share insights into their roles, the challenges they faced, and what makes "Vikkatakavi" a groundbreaking addition to Indian detective thrillers.
Naresh Agastya and Megha Akash with Cinema Online
Cinema Online: Detective Ramakrishna investigates a case blending supernatural elements with real-world politics. How did you approach balancing the rational mindset of a detective with the mystical aspects of the story?
Naresh Agastya
: The character of Detective Ramakrishna is inherently clever and logical, but the story introduces supernatural elements that challenge his rationality. I played with subtle nuances to show his skepticism while still leaving room for the mystical elements to impact his judgment. The cleverness of Ramakrishna lies in his ability to embrace the unexpected while staying grounded in logic.
The story takes place in Amaragiri, which is gradually going underwater. How does this time pressure affect your character's approach to the investigation?
Naresh
: Interestingly, the submergence of Amaragiri isn't portrayed as a pressing disaster in the show. Instead, the focus is on the people of the town, who slowly begin to relocate. However, the mystery intensifies as the townsfolk start experiencing memory loss, which they believe is tied to a divine curse. Ramakrishna's task is to unravel the truth behind these occurrences while navigating the unique environment created by the town's impending fate.
Did you consult any real detectives to prepare for this role?
Naresh
: No, I instead drew inspiration from detective stories and series like Sherlock Holmes. I also infused my character with a subtle, quirky energy that aligns with my own personality, making Ramakrishna relatable and distinct.
What aspects of Detective Ramakrishna's character resonated most strongly with you?
Naresh
: His quirkiness and subtle humor struck a chord with me. It's a trait that I share in real life, so it felt natural to portray. Additionally, the linguistic nuances of speaking in a Telangana dialect added an exciting challenge, as it differs from my everyday speech, which is rooted in the Andhra region.
Megha, what was your first reaction when you read the role of Princess Lakshmi?
Megha Akash
: I was thrilled! Playing a royal character is always exciting, and Princess Lakshmi's story is set in the 1970s-a period I feel deeply connected to, especially because of its fashion and style. The depth of the character, coupled with the era, made me eager to dive in.
Playing royalty comes with its unique challenges. How did you prepare for this role?
Megha
: Preparing to play Princess Lakshmi involved striking a balance between grace and strength. I collaborated closely with the director to flesh out her backstory and ensure her character felt authentic. While we all have a perception of royalty, it was important for me to understand Lakshmi's core values and how she stands out as a modern yet traditional woman.
What was the most interesting aspect of portraying Princess Lakshmi? Did you draw inspiration from any real-life princesses?
Megha
: What fascinated me most was Lakshmi's resilience and grace despite the challenges she faces. She's more than just a princess-she's educated and opinionated, which made her incredibly relatable. I didn't base her on any specific real-life princess, as I prefer to craft my characters uniquely. Instead, I absorbed various references from old films, images, and historical accounts to build her persona.
Were there any local customs or beliefs you had to familiarise yourself with to portray Lakshmi authentically?
Megha
: Not really. Lakshmi is a character who often challenges the customs and beliefs of her time, which made it easier for me to connect with her. Her forward-thinking mindset is what sets her apart from her family and those around her.
The series is being showcased on ZEE5 Global, giving international audiences access to South Asian stories. How do you feel about this, and do you have a message for your fans?
Megha
: It's amazing that ZEE5 Global allows audiences worldwide to experience Vikkatakavi. Many of my family members live abroad, and it's exciting for them to watch the show simultaneously with us here in India. I hope fans everywhere enjoy the unique world we've created and connect with our characters.
Naresh
: Vikkatakavi is a unique series that blends retro settings with supernatural and investigative drama. It's a fresh concept for Indian audiences, and I'm confident it will strike a chord with viewers globally as well.
