Elementary "Sherlock Holmes"

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law, who play Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson respectively, look harassed by the box office numbers.
20 Dec – After his comeback, it seemed that every movie that Robert Downey Jr., touched turned to gold, including his latest, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" which came top in the weekend box office, although the sequel opened to a total less than its predecessor. The movie grossed a total of U.S. $39.6 million as opposed to the U.S. $62.3 million that the original "Sherlock Holmes" took, while the movie that came second place, which was "Alvin And The Chipmunks: Chipwrecked", also made for a disappointing weekend box office total for a sequel. On the other hand, "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" may have came in third, but it made a strong box office gross despite the limited theatrical release in the U.S., according to online tracker, Box Office Mojo.

However, for Malaysia, "Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol" opened to wide commercial success, taking first place in the weekend box office charts, but it remains to be seen if Cruise will be able to perform his almost impossible mission against Robert Downey Jr. when "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" sees release this week. Second act is the group of singing chipmunks in "Alvin And The Chipmunks 3", while locally-made, "Songlap", a movie about human trafficking, makes a worthy addition to Malaysia's recent run of successful movies, for the weekend just gone.

In Singapore, all eyes are on Cruise too as they bear witness to his climb up the Burj Khalifa, leading Cruise to take the lead in the weekend box office out from the "New Year's Eve" celebration. The latter dropped to third place while second is roped in by the shipwrecked chipmunks in their search for help on a remote island in "Alvin And The Chipmunks 3".

Other new releases and sneak peeks last week in Malaysia include, "Mouna Guru", "Mambattiyan", " The Snow Flower And The Secret Fan", "My Own Swordsman" and "Ladies vs Ricky Bahl" while in Singapore, the only new releases were the ones that dominated the charts.
