Tarsem Singh's "Immortals" hacked and slashed its way through scores of movies to the top of box office charts |
15 Nov – Tarsem Singh's spectacular Olympian effort "Immortals" came and they conquered the top spot, taking in US $32 million for the weekend, amid a season of blockbusters. Even with double Adam Sandlers, "Jack And Jill", could not take on Theseus, as it opens at second place this week. Following the couple up the hill is "Puss In Boots", which is the spin-off to "Shrek" in third place at the North American box office for the weekend of 10 to 13 November, according to online tracker, Box Office Mojo.
Not only did "Immortals" conquer North America, they fought sharks to make their mark in Malaysia as well. The movie took over the top spot from "Shark Night 3D" while "The Adventures Of Tintin: Secret Of The Unicorn", took second place last weekend. Taiwanese hit, "You Are The Apple Of My Eye" moved up to third place, from the 11th, possibly because audiences needed a brief respite from all the action and horror movies perpetuating the cinemas.
In other related movie news in Malaysia, joining Johnny Depp's latest movie "The Rum Diary" which is not showing in Malaysia, is also "Footloose", which previously held a release date of 5 January 2012. Although the distributor of the movie could not be reached for comment, the reasoning behind the removal of the film could be due to the movie performing poorly in Singapore over its release last 27 October.
Singapore saw "The Adventures Of Tintin: Secret Of The Unicorn" taking first place as "You Are The Apple Of My Eye" takes second place, leaving the local Singaporean horror film, "23:59" to find a third spot at the local box office for the past weekend. Other new releases and sneak peeks last week in Malaysia include "The Message", "Rock Star", "Love Song Of Kang Ding", "A Singing Fairy", "Abuya" as well as the European Union Film Festival movies "Great Expectations", "Europolis", "The Afternoon Of A Torturer", "Cell 211", "Wedding In Bessarabia" and "Sophie Scholl – The Final Days".
In Singapore, new releases and sneak peeks last week were "11-11- 11", and "Rock Star".
