"Act Of Valor" honoured


A Navy SEAL says goodbye to the bottom spot of the box office.
28 Feb – Considering the huge marketing done by Relativity Media, it would be a surprise if "Act Of Valor" did not open first in the U.S. box office this week (23 to 26 Feb), but it did. The star appeal of Mike McCoy and Scott Waugh's American war film are its stars, which are a group of active duty Navy SEALs. With a gross of US $24.5 million, "Act Of Valor" managed to put down "Tyler Perry's Good Deeds", a movie by and starring Tyler Perry himself, as businessman Wesley Deeds, who is jolted out of his scripted life when he meets Lindsey, a single mother who works as a cleaner in his office building; to second place. Nestling at third was last week's fourth place taker, "Journey 2: The Mysterious Island", overall which has held extremely well, for the weekend gone by.

On the other hand, a different kind of war wages in Malaysia, for at the top spot in the box office is the sequel "Adnan Sempit 2", returns with the story about Adnan, a street biker who won the heart of Nadia, but now has to prove his mettle to her wealthy parents before he can officialise their relationship. Coming in second is another bike rider played by Nicholas Cage, which is the fire-blazing hero of yet another sequel, "Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance". Last, but not least, the rom-com "This Means War" placed third, padding out the list of 'love wars' movies, starring Chris Pine and Tom Hardy as two CIA agents and best friends who are at odds with each other when they both fall for the same woman (Reese Witherspoon).

In Singapore, "This Means War" has a wider audience, which saw the movie in first place instead despite the lack of marketing runs, by indulging in Singaporeans' penchant for humour with the antics of the two spies who abused their technology and privileges to win the heart of the woman they both love. As a result, "Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengeance" dropped to second place, while "The Grey"; otherwise known as 'the movie where Liam Neeson fights wolves', saw release in Singapore only recently, but managed to battle its way through the pack to third.

In Malaysia, other new releases over the weekend were "Mr And Mrs Gambler", "Kattu Puli", "Special Forces", "Fist Of Dragon" and "Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya".

On the other hand, other releases in Singapore were, "Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close", "Mr And Mrs Gambler", "Hugo", "Runway Beat", "Jodi Breakers" and "Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya".
