"Avengers" smashes box office

Iron Man and Captain America cannot believe their total box office gross.

15 May – As of Monday, Joss Whedon's superhero epic "Marvel's The Avengers" has joined the ranks of movies that broke the $1 billion worldwide box office record. Despite tying with James Cameron's "Avatar" and "Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part 2", "Marvel's The Avengers" has only been playing in cinemas for 10 of those days, which further adds to its impressive resume. On the other hand, the Tim Burton-Johnny Depp horror comedy "Dark Shadows" debuted last week in second place to disappointing box office gross numbers, although part of its faults can be credited to the competition provided by "Marvel's The Avengers". Plot-wise, the film was criticised by early viewers, not to mention that there was almost no marketing done by Warner Bros. for it. Rounding up the top three is Tim Story's comedy "Think Like A Man", according to sources at Box Office Mojo (10 to 13 May).

Similarly in Malaysia, "Marvel's The Avengers" is still in top spot last weekend, with Burton and Depp's "Dark Shadows" placing second. Not many viewers over here know that "Dark Shadows" is based on the 1966–1971 gothic horror soap opera of the same name about a wealthy playboy named Barnabas Collins who was cursed to turn into a vampire when he evokes the ire of the witch, Angelique Bouchard (Eva Green). In third place is another horror-comedy with a local flavour titled "Nongkrong", about three men who end up summoning three spirits when they try to use mystical means to obtain winning lottery numbers.

In Singapore, the top two remained the same, with "Marvel's The Avengers" in the lead while "Dark Shadows" played second fiddle. However, Singaporeans get to watch another television drama that was adapted to film in the form of "21 Jump Street", starring heartthrob Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as a pair of cop buddies who are sent to infiltrate a local high school to bring down a synthetic drug ring.

New movies opening in Malaysia this week are "Gone", "Ghost Buddies", "Nongkrong", "Shadows Of Love", "Kalakalappu" and "Dangerous Ishhq".

In Singapore, new movies opening this week are "Fairy Tale Killer", "Being Flynn", "My "Girlfriend Can See Ghosts" and "Dangerous Ishhq".
