Ben Affleck is Best Director

Ben Affleck gets biggest honour of his career with a Best Director win at the Golden Globes.

14 Jan – Ben Affleck may have been snubbed by the 85th Academy Awards for his work on "Argo", but this year's Golden Globes is paying him big honours with a Best Director win for the director-actor. The film also took home the Best Motion Picture for Drama.

"I don't care what the award is," said Affleck when accepting the trophy. He also thanked his wife, Jennifer Garner, for "sitting through this."

The award ceremony, co-hosted by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, packed more than one surprise for the night as former US President Bill Clinton appeared to introduce the clip of Best Picture nominee "Lincoln".

The clip for "Argo" also had a special presenter in the form of former CIA agent Tony Mendez. The movie was based on his successful mission to smuggle American diplomats out of Iran during the 1979 hostage crisis.

Another surprise win for the night was Quentin Tarantino being awarded Best Screenplay for the movie "Django Unchained", as crowd favourite Tony Kushner, who was nominated for "Lincoln", was the one expected to go home with the prize seeing as he was also the frontrunner for an Oscar win in the upcoming awards.

Tarantino was apparently quite astonished when his name was announced as he exclaimed that "This is a damn surprise, and I'm happy to be surprised!" upon picking up the award onstage.

"Les Misérables" won big with Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway going home with Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress.

"Les Misérables" also went home with big wins. Lead Hugh Jackman won Best Actor in Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical while Anne Hathaway impressed enough to take home Best Supporting Actress in Motion Picture. The film also won Best Motion Picture, Comedy or Musical.

The 70th Golden Globe Awards was held early this morning at the Beverly Hilton.
