"Man Of Steel" soars in cinemas

"Man Of Steel" easily takes first place in its opening week.

18 Jun – To nobody's surprise, Zack Snyder's "Man Of Steel" debuts in cinemas with a whopping USD 128.7 million grossing at the top of the box office chart in the U.S. As one of the most-anticipated films of the year, "Man Of Steel" has the second-best opening of 2013 so far behind "Iron Man 3", and it also performed well compared to 2006's "Superman Returns".

While critics weren't very thrilled with "Man Of Steel", the general audience love it, as the film also debuted in first place in Malaysia and Singapore. This time around, it is British actor Henry Cavill who dons the tights and the cape in Zack Snyder's film to defend Earth against General Zod (Michael Shannon) and his followers. Amy Adams plays Lois Lane, Clark Kent a.k.a. Superman's love interest who is also a journalist working at the Daily Planet.

All attention may be on "Man Of Steel", but there were also other movies that made their debut over the weekend of 13 to 16 June, such as Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen's "This Is The End", which opened in a distant second place. The film sees many Hollywood celebrities playing themselves who, while attending a party at James Franco's house, are faced with the apocalypse.

Rounding up the top three is "Now You See Me", which had the best hold in the Top 12 and it seems likely that the movie will close over USD 100 million.

Andy Lau plays a secret agent that is tasked with retrieving two halves of a stolen painting in "Switch".

In Malaysia, "After Earth" fell to second place from the champion's seat, followed by Jay Sun's "Switch", a James Bond-esque Asian film starring Andy Lau, Lin Chi-ling and Zhang Jingchu. The latter has garnered numerous negative reviews online, but that did not stop moviegoers in Malaysia from watching it.

In Singapore, charting second and third place is "Now You See Me" and "After Earth", respectively.

Other new films that were released over the weekend in Malaysia are "Pecah", "Thillu Mullu", "Fukrey", "Theeya Velai Seiyanum Kumaru" and "Krishna Thulasi".

Other new films that were released over the weekend in Singapore are "Tad The Lost Explorer", "Switch", "Pee Mak" and "Fukrey".
