One 'Hobbit' to rule them all

Bilbo Baggins: Look at all this money my movie is making!

17 Dec – "The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug" is the one to rule them all for the box office weekend of 13 to 15 December 2013, as it soars first place in North America, Malaysia and Singapore since its opening last week!

Grossing over USD73.7 million in North America, the movie is the second-highest December show ever behind its first instalment; "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" which grossed USD11 million more when it was released last year.

Taking second place in North America is Disney's "Frozen" which held first place last week, clearly not 'cool' enough for the Christmas season as audiences preferred the fire-breathing Smaug. Also failing to impress the crowd with its Christmas theme is "Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas", the fifth "Madea" instalment from Tyler Perry which made its debut at third place last week.

Apart from having the word 'Storm' in their titles, do you think audiences at the cinema may confuse Andy Lau's "Firestorm" (top) and Louis Khoo's "The White Storm" (below)?

In Malaysia, "The Desolation Of Smaug" is enough to keep everyone enamoured as they get to experience the movie not only in 2D, 3D and in IMAX, but also in HFR 3D and the new Dolby Atmos system offered by Golden Screen Cinemas which has definitely contributed to its his high box office collection. In second and third place respectively is two 'Storm' crime related Hong Kong titles; "Firestorm" starring Andy Lau and Gordon Lam and "The White Storm" starring Louis Khoo, Sean Lau and Nick Cheung.

Singapore is also home to Middle Earth fans with "The Desolation Of Smaug" taking the top spot knocking off "Frozen" to take the second place last weekend. "Firestorm", which held its world premiere at Screen Singapore on 4 December at Resorts World Sentosa, opened last week to a decent third place at the Singapore box office.

Other new releases in Malaysia last week were "Ivan Veramathiri", "Paku" and "Papadom 2".

Other new releases in Singapore last week were "Chinese Puzzle", "Thérèse Desqueyroux", "Control" and "Last Vegas".
