Oscar nominations revealed

"Lincoln" and "Life Of Pi" lead the 85th Academy Awards with 12 and 11 nominations respectively.
11 Jan – Before handling his first hosting job ever at the 2013 Academy Awards in February, "Ted" director Seth MacFarlane received the privilege to unveil the list of this year's Oscar nominees and nominations alongside "The Amazing Spider-Man" star Emma Stone to the public yesterday, according to CNN.com.

After receiving 10 nominations at the BAFTA Awards recently, Steven Spielberg has another thing to cheer about as he is nominated for Best Director at the Oscars once again for his well-acclaimed historical feature "Lincoln", a film about the America's 16th president, which leads the race with 12 nominations.

"It's been an absolutely thrilling morning. I was awoken by my publicist telling me about our multiple nominations. It's the best wakeup call I've had in 14 years!" said Spielberg.

He added, "I'm always surprised by recognition. I'm deeply grateful, and we are so honored by our 12 nominations, especially being in the great company of such amazing films."

Ang Lee's film adaptation of Yann Martel's novel "Life Of Pi" is the runner-up with 11 nominations, followed by "Les Misérables" and "Silver Linings Playbook", both of which has eight nominations respectively.

Predictably, Daniel Day-Lewis has once again nominated for Best Actor with his portrayal of Abraham Lincoln in "Lincoln" alongside Hollywood's A-list actors including Denzel Washington ("Flight"), who won the category with "Training Day" back in 2001, Hugh Jackman ("Les Misérables"), Bradley Cooper ("Silver Linings Playbook") and Joaquin Phoenix ("The Master").

Denzel Washington is nominated for Best Actor for "Flight" while Jessica Chastain is nominated for Best Actress for "Zero Dark Thirty".
Meanwhile, the nominees for Best Actress are Naomi Watts ("The Impossible"), Jessica Chastain ("Zero Dark Thirty"), Jennifer Lawrence ("Silver Linings Playbook"), Emmanuelle Riva ("Amour"), and Quvenzhane Wallis, 9, the youngest to be nominated in the category ever for "Beasts Of The Southern Wild", a story about a little girl struggling at life in the Louisiana Coast with her father.

On the other hand, legend Robert De Niro is nominated for Best Supporting Actor with "Silver Linings Playbook", his first Oscar nod since "Cape Fear" in 1991, together with Christopher Waltz ("Django Unchained"), Philip Seymour Hoffman ("The Master"), Alan Arkin ("Argo"), and Tommy Lee Jones ("Lincoln").

The Best Supporting Actress category is embraced by contenders like Sally Field ("Lincoln"), Jacki Weaver ("Silver Linings Playbook"), Helen Hunt ("The Sessions"), Amy Adams ("The Master") and Anne Hathaway ("Les Misérables").

Fans will have the chance to watch Best Picture nominees like "Silver Linings Playbook", "Beasts Of The Southern Wild", "The Sessions" and "Zero Dark Thirty" in Singapore but not in Malaysia. Of all the nominees, only "Les Misérables" and "Life Of Pi" have been screened in Malaysia, with "Django Unchained" and "Lincoln" to be released in the months to come.

The 85th Annual Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 24 February.
