17 Jun – The Dragons and their riders of "How To Train Your Dragon 2" barged into last weekend's box office chart, from 12 to 15 June 2014, and have successfully pushed Jolie's "Maleficent" and Cruise's "Edge Of Tomorrow" down Malaysia and Singapore's chart but failed to claim the throne in the U.S. as they lost to Channing Tatum's "22 Jump Street".
The battle was close for the U.S. weekend box office collection with "22 Jump Street" taking the lead with a total gross of over USD57.0 million on its first weekend.
Coming in second is the epic fantasy animated film "How To Train Your Dragon 2" which was also released last weekend, losing to Tatum's film with a slight difference of USD7.6 million.
On the other hand, "Maleficent" lost terribly as the Disney film came in third place with a weekend gross of over USD18.5 million which is a big drop compared to last weekend's gross where helmer Angelina Jolie managed to collect over USD34.3 million.
Not only that, "The Fault In Our Stars" which ranked first at the previous weekend box office was horribly beaten to fifth place via last weekend's collections.
Although unable to win over Tatum's action-comedy film in the U.S, "How I Met Your Dragon 2" splendidly won the hearts of Malaysians as it claimed first place in last weekend's box office chart. The films that got second and third place are "Maleficent" and "Edge of Tomorrow" respectively.
Similar to Malaysia's chart, "How To Train Your Dragon 2" also dominated Singapore's weekend box office chart with "Edge of Tomorrow" and "Maleficent" coming in at second and third place.
Also opening in Malaysia last week were, "Abba", "Suatu Malam Kubur Berasap 2", "A Million Ways To Die In The West", "CEO", "Blended", "Black Butler" and "Mundasupatti" and "Naan Than Bala".
Other new movies that opened in Singapore last week are "Under The Skin", "The Lion Men: Ultimate Showdown", "Words And Pictures", "A Million Ways To Die In The West", "Make Me Shudder 2: Shudder Me Mae Nak" and "Mudasupatti".
