18 Feb - "Gravity" and "12 Years a Slave" have both carved up a sizeable chunk of the BAFTA award categories between them, with "12 Years a Slave" winning two big awards – best film and leading actor for Chiwetel Ejiofor, and "Gravity" winning the night with six out of its 11 nominations. The "Gravity" wins included outstanding British film, director (Alfonso Cuarón) and cinematographer (Emanuel Lubezki), and a BAFTA for its brilliant special visual effects team. The Supporting Actor awards went to Jennifer Lawrence for "American Hustle", beating "12 Years A Slave's" Lupita Nyong'o, and in a surprise win, Barkhad Abdi for Paul Greengrass'' "Captain Phillips".
Cate Blanchett, who is a shoe-in for the Best Actress award for the Oscars, won again at the BAFTAs, but instead of dedicating her award to her director Woody Allen, she had dedicated it to actor Phillip Seymour Hoffman who had recently passed away.
