"Days of Future Past" rewrites top spot

Wolverine is trying to remember if he has been in this spot before.

27 May – Time traveling is certainly one way to write your history at the box office, as proven by "X-Men: Days of Future Past" in all territories of North America, Malaysia and Singapore for the weekend of 23 to 25 May. With Wolverine leading the X-Men in "Days of Future Past", in North America the movie grossed USD90.7 million in its opening weekend, which is also the second largest opening for the 14 year old franchise.

Although it failed to beat "X-Men: The Last Stand" as the largest opening in the series when it opened on the same weekend eight years ago, it was still strong enough to put Gareth Edward's "Godzilla" down to second place that made USD31.4 million over the weekend.

Also entering into the top three of the North American charts is the Adam Sandler comedy "Blended", reuniting Sandler with Drew Barrymore since "50 First Dates", but at USD14.2 million, its mediocre opening is considered a flop at best.

"Kochadaiiyaan" takes over "Bad Neighbours" for third place at the Malaysian box office.

"Days of Future Past" also made its presence known in Malaysia, mostly reflecting what it had achieved in the U.S. by pushing the gigantic "Godzilla" down to second place at the box office charts. However, the biggest upset of the weekend came for "Bad Neighbours", when it got arrested down to the eighth spot, with the newly arrived animated historical epic "Kochadaiiyaan", starring Rajnikath, replacing it at third place.

In Singapore, the entry of "Days of Future Past" caused a minor shift in its box office by having "Godzilla" making its way down to second while "The Amazing Spider-Man 2" manages to break its fall down at third, maintaining its lead just above "Bad Neighbours", starring Seth Rogen and Zac Efron.

Other movies that opened in Malaysia last week are "Heropanti", "Miracle Box", "Super Stone", "Awak Nak Kahwin Dengan Saya" and "Veggitales".

Other new movies that opened in Singapore last week are "Fandry", "God's Own Country", "Kochadaiiyaan" in Tamil, "Dusk", "Grace of Monacco" starring Nicole Kidman, "The Canyons" and Edmund Pang's "Aberdeen".
