Han Solo gets solo "Star Wars" spinoff

Will Han Solo shoot first in his solo movie?

9 Jul – Being one of the most iconic "Star Wars" characters, it was only a matter of time before smuggler-turned-hero Han Solo gets his own solo spinoff.

Fans who are familiar with movies such as "The Lego Movie", "Cloudy with A Chance of Meatballs", as well as "21 Jump Street" and "22 Jump Street", will be delighted to know the helmers of said movies will be the ones directing the upcoming spinoff.

Christopher Miller and Phil Lord will be directing a script by father-son writing team Lawrence Kasdan and Jon Kasdan, with the former having previously written the screenplays for "The Empire Strikes Back", "Return of the Jedi" and "The Force Awakens".

The Lego version of Han Solo made a cameo in "The Lego Movie".

"This is the first film we've worked on that seems like a good idea to begin with. We promise to take risks, to give the audience a fresh experience, and we pledge ourselves to be faithful stewards of these characters who mean so much to us," said the directing duo.

While there are fans who are excited for another confirmed "Star Wars" movie – "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" opens this 17 December and "Star Wars: Rogue One" on 15 December 2016, there are also those who lament the fact that no one will ever be able to replace Harrison Ford as Han Solo.

Earlier this year, there were rumours of "Kingsman: The Secret Service" star, Taron Egerton, playing the younger version of Han Solo in an upcoming spinoff. This could be the movie, though there's no update on whether Egerton is really joining the force or other actors are being considered.

As revealed on StarWars.com, the movie will focus on "how young Han Solo became the smuggler, thief, and scoundrel whom Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi first encountered in the cantina at Mos Eisley."

The Han Solo anthology movie is slated for global release on 25 May 2018.
