"Insurgent" surged to the top

"Insurgent" rises straight to the top in the U.S. and S'pore.

24 Mar – Tris and the gang return in "Insurgent", the highly-anticipated sequel to last year's "Divergent". The movie opened at number one in the U.S. and Singapore, and managed to land in second place at the Malaysia box office for 19 to 22 March.

"Insurgent" collects USD52.2 million at the U.S. box office, leaving Disney's live-action "Cinderella" as first runner-up with her USD34.9 million gross. Run as he might, Liam Neeson only finishes at number three, with "Run All Night" collecting only USD5 million.

"Cinderella" still not dethroned on M'sia's box office chart.

Meanwhile, in Malaysia, "Cinderella" still has her seat on the throne as the movie takes first place once more. "Insurgent" opens at number two while another new release, Singapore director Jack Neo's "Ah Boys to Men 3: Frogmen", finally debuts in Malaysia and leaps straight onto the third spot.

In Singapore, "Insurgent" once again leaves the Disney princess in the dust. The sequel opens at number one at the box office, forcing "Cinderella" to settle for second place. "Ah Boys to Men 3: Frogmen" does not budge from the top three and stands guard at its third place position.

Other new releases in Malaysia for last week are "Demonic", "Isyarat Cinta", "Little Big Master", "Zhong Kui: Snow Girl And The Dark Crystal", "Home", "Out Of The Dark", "Legend Of A Rabbit: The Martial Of Fire", "Accidental Love" and "Vaanavil Vaazhkai".

Over in Singapore, other movies that also opened last weekend are "Isyarat Cinta", "The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel", "Little Big Master", "Kidnapping Freddy Heineken" and "Demonic".
