Tom Hardy stars in "Mad Max: Fury Road".

27 Mar – After a 20-year gap since Australian director George Miller's last "Mad Max" film, the hero of the legendary saga returns this year in the upcoming "Mad Max: Fury Road".

According to the official website of the Festival De Cannes, the new movie will premiere at the 68th Cannes Film Festival in the Official Selection Out of Competition slot this coming 14 May. The festival, which will take place between 13 to 24 May, currently has only the one film announced as it will only reveal its official lineup next month.

"Mad Max: Fury Road", is the fourth instalment in the franchise; the original "Mad Max" was released in 1979, when it became a worldwide hit and was soon followed by sequels 1981's "Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior" and 1985's "Mad Max: Beyond Thunderstorm".

The movie stars Charlize Theron and Nicholas Hoult, as well as Tom Hardy as the iconic character Max Rockatansky, which was previously played by Mel Gibson in the first three films.

The official synopsis for the movie reveals that Mad Max, haunted by his turbulent past, believes the best way to survive is to wander alone. Nevertheless, he becomes swept up with a group fleeing across the Wasteland in a War Rig driven by an elite Imperator, Furiosa. They are escaping a Citadel tyrannized by the Immortan Joe, from whom something irreplaceable has been taken. Enraged, the Warlord marshals all his gangs and pursues the rebels ruthlessly in the high-octane Road War that follows.
