Guillermo del Toro's next movie may be "Fantastic Voyage" remake

Guillermo del Toro is no longer working on "Pacific Rim 2".

9 Jan – Director Guillermo del Toro has his eyes set on a new project, now that his schedule is wide open after "Pacific Rim 2" has reportedly been shelved.

The director is currently in discussion with Twentieth Century Fox to helm the remake of "Fantastic Voyage", according to The Hollywood Reporter.

This would re-team del Toro with James Cameron ("Avatar") and David Goyer, the latter who wrote the script to his vampire movie, "Blade 2". The remake script is written by Goyer and Justin Rhodes ("Grassroots"), who will continue to develop it.

Cameron had been interested in helming the movie since the late '90s though later shifted his focus from director to producer.

Before del Toro, other directors that had been circling the project include Roland Emmerich, Paul Greengrass and Shawn Levy.

Guillermo del Toro's 2015 movie, "Crimson Peak".

del Toro's most recent release was "Crimson Peak", which the director insisted was not a horror movie, still it was creepy enough to garner mostly positive reviews.

This was supposed to be followed with the sequel to Legendary Pictures' 2013 sci-fi movie, "Pacific Rim". However, that was taken off the release schedule and is now "off the table indefinitely".

It remains to be seen whether the sequel will be picked up again once China's Dalian Wanda successfully acquired Legendary.

In related news, the illustrator of the original "Fantastic Voyage", Frank Armitage, who was also a Disney artist that did designs for theme parks worldwide, passed away at the age of 91 on Monday. The visual effects of the movie received a positive reception during its release.

The 1966 "Fantastic Voyage" follows a team of scientists who are shrunk in order to enable them to go inside a fellow scientist's body to save his life.
