"Alien: Covenant" sequel to start filming next year

Michael Fassbender returns in "Alien: Covenant".

11 May – "Alien: Covenant" has barely hit theatres and director Ridley Scott already has plans for a sequel.

The sequel is expected to start filming in 2018, according to IGN.

"We're writing [a sequel] now, as we speak," director Ripley Scott revealed. "I'll be filming that within 14 months."

There might even be more than one sequel, as Scott has expressed his interest in making more follow-ups to the alien sci-fi horror film as long as the sequels are up to standard.

"It's good when it's good. If the sequel's good, then it's worthwhile."

Scott also referred to Neil Blomkamp's scrapped "Alien 5" with the title: "Awakening". Blomkamp's film was meant to be a sequel to the earlier "Alien" films, with a possible return of Sigourney Weaver's character, Ripley.

The studio didn't go forward with it but Scott still wanted to bring life back into the "Alien" franchise, so he did.

And now, here we are. With "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" as prequels that set up Scott's 1979 "Alien" and that were supposed to answer any unanswered questions and fill in any plot holes left by the previous movies.

But, we are somehow left with more questions than answers, though Scott said that this was deliberate. Elements of the story was left "wide open" to keep the audience questioning and get them coming back for more, if only to satiate their curiosity.

The "Alien" franchise excels at its world-building and mythology, and there's more than enough foundation to create more movies.

"Alien: Covenant" has already arrived in theatres yesterday in Malaysia and Singapore. The film is scheduled for release on 18 May in Cambodia.
