"The Last Jedi" director to create new "Star Wars" trilogy

More releases to come for fans of "Star Wars".

10 Nov – With his highly-anticipated "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" fast approaching its release date, director Rian Johnson now has another good news for fans to rejoice in.

Lucasfilm has just announced that Johnson will next create a brand-new "Star Wars" trilogy, in which he is also set to write and direct its first instalment, with long-time collaborator Ram Bergman attached to produce.

"We all loved working with Rian on "The Last Jedi," said President of Lucasfilm, Kathleen Kennedy.

"He's a creative force, and watching him craft "The Last Jedi" from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy."

Despite falling under the "Star Wars" brand, the upcoming project will take on a completely new story, with introduction of characters "from a corner of the galaxy that "Star Wars" lore has never before explored".

""Star Wars" is the greatest modern mythology and we feel very lucky to have contributed to it. We can't wait to continue with this new series of films," added Johnson and Bergman in a joint statement.

A live-action "Star Wars" television series is also in the making and set to air on Disney's new entertainment streaming service, which will launch by the end of 2019, according to Variety.

Pixar's "Monster Inc." and Disney Channel's "High School Musical" will also land their own respective television series adaptations alongside an original entry from Marvel.

No release date has been given for both new trilogy and television series, but fans can certainly look forward to catching "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" when it opens in cinemas this 14 December 2017.
