Here's why "Star Wars VIII" is titled "The Last Jedi"

It's official! "Star Wars VIII" is now "Star Wars: The Last Jedi".

24 Jan – The internet is set abuzz this morning with a new development in the upcoming instalment of the galaxy-conquering "Star Wars" franchise.

It was announced by "Star Wars'" official website that "Star Wars VIII", the next chapter in the Skywalker saga, will henceforth be known as "Star Wars: The Last Jedi".

The second instalment in the "Star Wars" sequel trilogy will see the return of Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker, Daisy Ridley as Rey, John Boyega as Finn and Adam Driver as Kylo Ren, to name a few. Fans will also get to see the late Carrie Fisher in her final film role as General Leia Organa.

"The Last Jedi" is directed by Rian Johnson, whereas J.J. Abrams, who directed the first instalment "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", is onboard as executive producer.

The movie will be picking up after the events of "The Force Awakens" and is expected to be bigger and darker.

Considering that the title of the "Star Wars" movies can always be taken as a hint as to what the plot of the movie might be, "The Last Jedi" has got fans reeling to figure out what's in store for the 'galaxy far far away'.

The question on everyone's mind is that who could be this 'Last Jedi'?

One of the more popular possibilities is that "The Last Jedi" might in this case refer to Luke Skywalker, who after making a brief appearance at the end of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens", is the very last of the Jedis left and it is up to him to train Rey as his protégé - in a very Obi-Wan Kenobi type role - to defeat the Dark Side. Since nothing was revealed of him in the Episode 7, the story this time around might give insight on why Luke chose to be a recluse after the events facing Darth Vader in "A New Hope".

Another possible theory is that Rey herself is "The Last Jedi" and Luke's role in the film is secondary and is merely there to pass the torch. Despite never been trained in her life, in the last movie Rey was revealed to be already strong with The Force. With proper Jedi training as guided by Luke Skywalker, the Episode 8 could set her up as the most powerful (more so than Anakin Skywalker) and the very last Jedi to save the galaxy.

"Star Wars: The Last Jedi" is bringing the Force into cinemas in December 2017.
