"The Great Wall" opens great in Singapore


Zhang Yimou directs the latest Matt Damon-starrer, "The Great Wall".

4 Jan – You'd think the whole whitewashing controversy would put a wall between the audience and Zhang Yimou's latest directorial effort, "The Great Wall", but you have another think coming.

To date, the Matt Damon-starrer has collected SGD2.2 million at the local box office.

Released on 29 December 2016, the fantasy action movie opened first on its opening weekend, consequently breaking a couple of #1 biggest opening weekend records in Singapore.

It is the number one biggest opening weekend for a Zhang Yimou title and also the number one biggest opening weekend for all-time Matt Damon's movies, beating 2014's "Interstellar", 2015's "The Martian" and 2016's "Jason Bourne".

In the movie, Damon stars as William Garin, a survivor from a European mercenary group, who joins the Chinese soldiers at the Great Wall of China to fight against monsters that are attacking the country.

"The Great Wall", also starring Andy Lau, Eddie Peng, Lu Han, Jing Tian, Pedro Pascal, Willem Dafoe and Zhang Hanyu, is currently showing in cinemas.
