"Wonder Woman" has officially been banned from Lebanon

Wonder Woman, played by model and ex-soldier Gal Gadot.

1 Jun – It is now official, the movie "Wonder Woman" is now banned from Lebanon.

An anonymous source confirmed it to the news outlet USA TODAY and Grand Cinemas, a cinema in Beirut, Lebanon even announced the news on their social media: "#WonderWoman has been banned in #Lebanon."

It is assumed that a ban was called for due to the lead actress of the movie, Gal Gadot being an ex-soldier of the Israeli army.

Lebanon and Israel have officially been at war for years.

Lebanon even has a law that boycotts Israeli products and inhibits all Lebanese citizens from travelling to Israel or contacting any citizen of Israel.

So, the ban of "Wonder Woman" is not so surprising.

Still, box office analysts predict that the ban will not greatly impact "Wonder Woman's" box office earnings.

Paul Dergarabedian, a senior box office analyst for comScore commented: "If anything, it's more a commentary on the state of world affairs. Any time there's a controversy like this, it only raises awareness for the film. This is all noise. Wonder Woman will be a monster hit this weekend."

Another box-office analyst from Exhibitor Relations, Jeff Block predicts "easily a $100 million opening weekend and then some."

Princess Diana fighting in World War I as Wonder Woman.

"Wonder Woman" is about the iconic female comic book superheroine and Amazonian princess, Diana. Princess Diana is peace loving and compassionate, but when a pilot crashes near her home and tells her of the ongoing conflict of the outside world, she chooses to fight a war to end all wars.

Diana is played by Gal Gadot who stars alongside Chris Pine as the World War I pilot, Steve Trevor. The movie was director by Patty Jenkins and has so far received phenomenally positive reviews.

The movie was set to open on 2 Jun in Lebanon.

"Wonder Woman" has already been released in Malaysia and Singapore and will arrive in Cambodian cinemas on 2 June.
