2019 will see another "Jumanji"/ "Star Wars" face-off

Ready to get out of the jungle and continue the battle in a galaxy far, far away?

27 Jan – After giving "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" a run for its money at the box office, "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" is hoping to do the same with its sequel, which reportedly will be squaring off against another "Star Wars" instalment in 2019.

The sequel isn't announced yet, but according to The Wall Street Journal, Chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, Thomas Rothman, is already cobbling together a follow-up to the massive global hit.

Reportedly, the sequel is slated for release on Christmas 2019, giving "Star Wars: Episode IX" at least a five-day head start with its 20 December release that same month.

If all goes well for the "Jumanji" sequel, it will be repeating the same magic its predecessor's been working since last month, when "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" opened also five days later after "The Last Jedi's" 15 December release in North America.

Who would've thought "Star Wars" would have to defend itself against "Jumanji"?

"The Last Jedi" is currently enjoying more than USD1 billion gross worldwide, though in their home country the "Star Wars" movie managed to last at the top spot of the box office for five weekends before being displaced by "Jumanji", which had been trailing close behind at number two since its opening weekend.

"Jumanji" has been sitting pretty at the top of the North American Weekend Box Office for four weekends now.

Worldwide, it is close to collecting USD800 million. Not a surprising number since it did manage to knock off "The Last Jedi" from the top spot of the local box office of countries such as Singapore and Malaysia, even becoming the third biggest film of all time in the latter country.

There is no word yet on whether the "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" cast, Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan and Kevin Hart, will be returning for the sequel but chances are they might, seeing that the chemistry between these team members actually work.
