Gong Li, Jet Li and Xana Tang to star in "Mulan"

Gong Li, Jet Li and Xana Tang are added to the live-action adaptation of "Mulan".

13 Apr – "Mulan" adds more star power to its cast as two prominent Chinese stars and a rising actress have now joined the live-action Disney remake.

Gong Li, Jet Li and Xana Tang have all been confirmed to star in the live-action remake of the 1998 classic animated movie, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

Gong Li, a seasoned veteran in Chinese cinema, will play the main villain in this retelling of the Chinese legend, which marks a major departure from the animated movie that has a man as its villain.

On the other hand, Chinese action star Jet Li, who is known for his martial artistry, will take on the role of the Chinese emperor who orders the mobilisation of his army.

Up and coming Chinese-Vietnamese actress Xana Tang will play Mulan's sister, an original character created exclusively for this live adaptation.

Prior to this, Donnie Yen was recently announced to play Mulan's mentor, Commander Tung (another original character), while Liu Yifei will portray the titular character who is also the eighth Disney princess.

Between switching to a female villain, giving Mulan a sister, and bringing on a male mentor, this live-action remake is shaping up to be significantly different from the original movie, which would be an interesting interpretation for modern viewers.

"Mulan" is set for a 27 March 2020 North American release date with Niki Caro on board to direct.
