Quentin Tarantino defends his portrayal of Bruce Lee in new movie

14 Aug – Hollywood filmmaker Quentin Tarantino recently defended the comical portrayal of legendary martial arts actor Bruce Lee in his new movie, "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood".

As reported on Mingpao, the director, who spoke about the controversy that was first aired by Lee's daughter Shannon, told the media at a news conference in Moscow that the late actor was "kind of an arrogant guy".


"I didn't just make a lot of that up. I heard him say things like that, to that effect. People are saying, 'Well, he never said he could beat up Muhammad Ali.' Uh, yeah, he did. Not only did he say that, his wife, Linda Lee, said that. The first biography I ever read was Linda Lee's 'Bruce Lee: The Man Only I Knew,' and she absolutely said it," he said.

As for the scene in which Brad Pitt's character Cliff Booth wins a second round of fight against Lee (played by Mike Moh), Tarantino said that in reality, Pitt would never be able to do so.

"If you ask me the question, 'Well, who would win in a fight: Bruce Lee or Dracula?' It's the same question. It's a fictional character. If I say Cliff could beat Bruce Lee up, he's a fictional character, then he could beat Bruce Lee up," he said.

In a previous interview, actress Shannon Lee stated that she felt disheartened by the movie's depiction of her father as an arrogant, egotistical punching bag, adding that despite understanding that it was a caricature of the man himself, she felt that it was unnecessary.
