26 Mar – As many as 600 to 700 cinemas in China are now re-opening, as the condition in the country improves. But with no new movies releasing at the moment, exhibitors have instead decided to re-release past big titles.

"Wolf Warrior 2", "The Wandering Earth" and "Wolf Totem" are among the Chinese movies that will receive re-runs at the cinemas, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

These re-opened cinemas are mostly by smaller exhibitors in rural parts of the country. No major cinema operators with nationwide locations have re-opened at the moment.

As such, these cinemas will be able to keep 100 percent of the ticket revenue. As a "charity effort" to help the exhibitors regain business, the selected movies' local producers and distributors have agreed to forgo their usual 43 percent cut of sales.

It's not just Chinese studios that are offering older titles for re-release, Hollywood studios are also throwing in some of theirs, though they will still earn their usual 25 percent cut of ticket revenue.

Marvel's "Avengers" movies, Christopher Nolan's "Interstellar" and "Inception", and "Avatar" are the major blockbusters that will be screened again in Chinese cinemas.

Interestingly, 2019's "Avengers: Endgame" replaced 2009's "Avatar" as the highest-grossing movie of all time following its release last year. With this re-release, the two big titles would be pitted against each other at the same time and Chinese audiences' receptions will either help the former retain its current crown or the latter to regain it.
