"Fast and Furious 11" set as the final instalment, but will The Rock return?

21 Oct – Previously set to end with 10 movies, another instalment has been added to the famous "Fast and Furious" franchise.

Deadline reported that Justin Lin is in talks with Universal Pictures to helm the newly added final movie as well, not a surprising move since he is already in the director's seat for both the postponed ninth instalment and yet-to-film tenth instalment.


This makes Lin the director with the most movies in the franchise, with a total of seven, having previously helmed the third until sixth instalments from 2006 to 2013, and recently returned for the final three instalments.

Though no plots have been revealed, most likely the plan is to tell one big story over two films that will wrap up the franchise that started almost 20 years ago.

Stars Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris "Ludacris" Bridges, Jordana Brewster, Nathalie Emmanuel and Sung Kang are expected to reprise their respective roles. Two big names are notably missing from the list: Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Jason Statham.

Thanks to the infamous "Fast & Furious" feud that mostly involved Gibson, Diesel and Johnson, following the production of a spinoff focused on Johnson and Statham's Hobbs and Shaw characters, the working relationship between the cast has been strained ever since.

However, while the chances of Johnson and Statham returning to the main film series are minimal now, fans will still get to see the duo in the upcoming sequel to their 2019 "Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw".

Meanwhile, Diesel and the gang will be back next year in "Fast & Furious 9: The Fast Saga", which was originally scheduled for release in April 2020 but was delayed to May 2021 when cinemas worldwide began temporarily shutting down earlier this year due to the pandemic.

Also part of the ninth movie are Charlize Theron and newly added cast members John Cena and Helen Mirren, as well singers Cardi B and Ozuna.
