20 May – It's been a while since Halle Berry landed herself a starring role in a major movie, so it's a welcome news for fans when it was announced that the actress will be seen leading a sci-fi disaster thriller soon.

Variety reported that the 53-year-old has been cast to star in Roland Emmerich's "Moonfall", which, as the title indicates, will be a movie set in outer space.

Berry's character will be a NASA astronaut-turned-administrator, whose previous space mission holds a clue about an imminent cosmic disaster. In the movie, she joins a ragtag team that is trying to save humanity after the moon is knocked from its orbit and is sent on a collision course with Earth.

Berry will star alongside Josh Gad, whose casting was announced last week. Gad will play an odd and unkempt genius named KC Houseman, whose prediction of the moon having fallen out of its orbit proves to be correct.

Emmerich, aside from directing, penned the script with his "2012" co-writer Harald Kloser as well as Spenser Cohen.

With a budget of USD150 million, production is expected to begin in Montreal this fall. Lionsgate is currently aiming to release the movie next year.

As for Berry, her last big screen appearance was in last year's "John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum". She will be seen next in her feature directorial effort, "Bruised", which sees her starring as an MMA fighter.
