28 Apr – British Pakistani actor Riz Ahmed revealed that he has lost two family members to COVID-19.

This was shared in an interview with British GQ, where the actor talked about how ethnic minorities are the hardest hit during the pandemic.

A recent update to the interview piece includes a WhatsApp message from the actor that states: "Didn't mention it in our interview but wanted to. Since we spoke I have lost two family members to Covid. I just want to believe their deaths and all the others aren't for nothing. We gotta step up to reimagine a better future."

While he didn't specifically name his relatives, he did earlier this month post on Instagram about the passing of his uncle Shakeel.

"We say we love the NHS [National Health Service] more than the Royal Family, more than the army, but do we love the people who keep the NHS alive? Because every time we tell people to f**k off back to where they came from, that's not what we're saying.

"So I really hope that this revelation, this awakening, opens our minds to that reality, to the stupidity of our prejudice," the actor said after talking about the way ethnic minorities are being treated during the pandemic, such as India calling it 'corona-jihad' and Trump using it as an excuse to ban immigration, while the NHS is made up of about 50% ethnic minorities.

The actor and rapper, whose big screen credits include "Venom" and "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story", was about to embark on a US and UK tour in support of his new album "The Long Goodbye" but had to cancel it last month due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
