11 Aug – Things seem to be looking up for Hollywood actor Johnny Depp, who has now been selected to receive the Donostia Award at this year's San Sebastian Film Festival.

The news was shared by the said festival on 9 August, calling the "Pirates of the Caribbean" star "one of contemporary cinema's most talented and versatile actors".

The Donostia Award, which is the festival's highest accolade, will be awarded to Depp on 22 September at the festival's Kursaal Auditorium. Among previous winners of the said award include Ethan Hawke, Sigourney Weaver, and Penelope Cruz.

It is noted that the actor is no stranger to San Sebastian, having attended the festival last year to present "Crock of Gold: A Few Rounds with Shane McGowan".

Depp's most recent work is the 2020 movie, "Minamata".

Depp, who has been entangled in a legal battle with ex-wife Amber Heard over accusations of abuse, recently scored one win after a New York judge granted his petition for the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) to release documents confirming that the "Aquaman" star has donated the entirety of her USD 7 million divorce settlement, as she has pledged earlier.

It is noted that Depp lost a libel lawsuit in London against UK publisher The Sun, which labelled him 'wife beater" in 2018 amid Heard's accusation of abuse against him. The judge who sided with Heard, claimed that one of the contributing factors to believing the actress was the said donation, stating that Depp's claim that she married him for money could not be true if she donated the full divorce settlement to charity.
