12 May – Amid the backlash against the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), US television network NBC announced that they will not be airing the Golden Globes Awards for the year 2022. In a statement released on 10 May, the network expressed, "We continue to believe that the HFPA is committed to meaningful reform. However, change of this magnitude takes time and work, and we feel strongly that the HFPA needs time to do it right. As such, NBC will not air the 2022 Golden Globes." "Assuming the organisation executes on its plan, we are hopeful we will be in a position to air the show in January 2023," it added.
The decision came following months of criticisms against the said Golden Globes organiser for its lack of diversity among members as well as a number of ethical issues, ranging from preferential treatment sought by its members to lack of racial representation in its ranks. The issue exacerbated when Netflix announced last week that it would not engage in any activities with the HFPA until more meaningful changes were made. Celebrities have also begun to speak up, with Tom Cruise returning his three Golden Globes in show of protest against the association.
