31 May – "Top Gun: Maverick" proves that the box office record is not just for superhero movies as it soars to US$134 million in the US alone during the Memorial Day weekend.

The film, which sees Tom Cruise reprising his role as US Navy pilot, Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, marks the first 100 million dollar debut for the actor, who's most biggest opening record was US$64.9 million through 2005's "War of the Worlds".

Overseas, the movie made US$124 million, despite not releasing in China and Russia, bringing a total of more than US$250 million worldwide.

This also means that the film is the fourth biggest pandemic era openings after "Spider-Man: No Way Home" (US$ 260 million), "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" (US$ 187 million) and "The Batman" (US$ 134 million).

A sequel to the 1986 movie, "Top Gun: Maverick" is a 2022 American action-drama film that follows Maverick's return to the United States Navy Strike Fighter Tactics Instructor programme (also known as "Top Gun"), where he must confront his past as he trains a group of younger fighter pilots, among them the son of Maverick's deceased best friend Goose.

The movie co-stars Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Ed Harris, and Val Kilmer among others.
