Malaysia picks "Abang Adik" for Oscar submission


"Abang Adik" represents Malaysia at 97th Academy Awards for Best International Feature Film!
4 Oct - After much deliberation, it was revealed that Jin Ong's film, "Abang Adik" will be Malaysia's representative entry for the Oscar's Best International Feature Film.

The news was announced by FINAS, stating that the decision was the result of a series of evaluations by the Film Selection Committee (JKPF) of FINAS, which consists of professionals in the field of film and compliance with the conditions of participation set by the organisers.

"This movie from More Entertainments won 19 international awards; an achievement that proved that Malaysia's films are able to compete and shine in the global world," a rep from FINAS said.

The movie, which is also produced by actress Angelica Lee (Lee Sinje) and stars Taiwanese actor Wu Kang-ren and Malaysian actor Jack Tan, tells the story of two undocumented orphans living in Malaysia - a deaf older brother who resigns himself to poverty and a younger brother who wants more in life.

It has won various accolades outside of Malaysia including at the New York Asian Film Festival, Udine's Far East Film Festival, and the Black Dragon Critics Award. It also made RM5.7 million in Malaysia, RM14.6 million in Taiwan, RM1.55 million in Hong Kong, and RM2.2 million at the box office in China.
