Hindi film "Santosh" is UK's rep to the Oscars
27 Sep - A few days after India announced "Laapataa Ladies" as its Oscar submission, the UK surprised many by submitting an Indian movie as well for the Best International Feature Film race.

The British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) announced the news in an official statement, saying that the Sandhya Suri film "Santosh" has been selected to represent the country at the Oscars.

This comes on the heels of Britain's Oscar win earlier for "The Zone of Interest".

"Santosh" stars Shahana Goswami and Sunita Rajwar in lead roles, and tells the story of a 28-year-old widow who takes on her late husband's job as a police constable and investigates the case of a young girl's murder.

The Hindi-language crime drama marks the directorial debut of British-Indian director Sandhya Suri. It had its world premiere in the Un Certain Regard section at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

The film's ability to compete as UK representative was due to its wide release in the country and backed by British producers.

The final five nominees will be announced by the Academy in January 2025.
